“ Even in strange and deeply troubling times, there is beauty. As we reckon with and try to digest global news, looking for ways to unlearn (un)conscious biases and cultivate greater tolerance and understanding, it’s been an incredible time to witness how creatives are capturing this moment in history. A wealth of art, photography, poetry and song has inundated our social media feeds, and shed light on the potential for their makers to unify us and communicate what is often lost in bite-sized news cycles or complicated jargon.

So often, these creative media help to portray what is left unsaid and serve as a universal language through which we can connect, emote and transform. One such creative whose work is underlined by this potential is photographer Lilli Boisselet, whose imagery from the local protests in Sydney in the the wake of George Floyd’s murder first captured the attention of Vogue.

In October 2019, Boisselet travelled to Cape York in Queensland and Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. While there, the photographer documented life as she observed it for Red Earth, whose mission is focussed on furthering reconciliation by welcoming people (especially school kids) to remote Indigenous Homelands where they can learn from local communities.

Here, she reflects back on a formative time of listening, learning and lensing the Indigenous communities she met with and the special memories each photograph evokes. “ VOGUE AUSTRALIA
